We are a daily news service focused on criminal fraud across Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England.  We comprehensively report on every notified case that is scheduled to come before the courts in these regions (unless reporting restrictions are in place).  We are the only news service to do so.

The 2017 Annual Fraud Indicator estimates fraud losses to the UK at around £190 billion every year.  At the time, the private sector was estimated to be suffering losses of £140 billion, the public sector ca £40 billion and individuals around £7 billion.  However, we know that financial crime soared during the COVID years and so estimates since these years have risen.

The costs are borne by people from all walks of life, in their businesses, homes and service centres.  Often, the cost is much more than financial - the personal and psychological effects can be huge.

Fraud is defined differently across the UK.  The Fraud Act (2006) is an Act of Parliament of the United Kingdom that came into force on 15 January 2007 and applies in England, Wales and Northern Ireland only.  The Act gives a statutory definition of the criminal offence of fraud and defines three classes for it - fraud by false representation, fraud by failing to disclose information, and fraud by abuse of position.

In Scotland, the Fraud Act 2006 does not apply.  Here, fraud is mainly dealt with under the common law and a number of statutory offences. The main fraud offences in Scotland are uttering, embezzlement, statutory frauds and common law fraud.  The originating point of the offence of fraud is a dishonest misrepresentation of fact which is designed to bring about a practical result, which eventuates.  If the practical result is not obtained, a charge of attempted fraud is sometimes considered.
